SLS certification for KVC factory, cordials and fruit drinks

Kelani Valley Canneries Limited (KVC) was recently awarded the SLS certification on a selection of products manufactured by the company.

"The demand for KVC branded products is gradually growing. What is encouraging is that, once a customer tries the product for the first time, we have found that he or she continues to purchase it. This is a good measurement of quality in terms of consumers perception," Executive Director of KVC, Chula Senewiratna said at the presentation ceremony.

A well-equipped factory complex set up by the late R. L. P. Senewiratna in 1968 is in the Kelani Valley basin by the Ratnapura road at Hanwella, famous for its quality spring water and fruit cultivation.

Subsequently, in 1999 the organisation joined the DSI Samson Group as an associate company who has now taken over the distribution of KVC products islandwide.

The KVC range includes Jams, Cordials, Sauces, Chutneys, Pickles, Sambols, Kithul Treacle, Fruits in Syrup, Canned fruit juice, Frozen RTC or ready-to-cook vegetables and RTD ready-to-drink fruit drinks. Exports which were started in 1974 have won the organisation many awards including the prestigious Presidential Award in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987 and 1989. At present, the company exports its products to Japan, UK, USA, Germany, Canada and most other major European markets. KVC also exports and supplies some of the leading supermarkets in Europe.

A specially supervised out grower arrangements has ensured that KVC products have access to farm fresh, organically grown selected fruits and vegetables cultivated under strict and controlled conditions.

In 1990, having commenced the production of organically certified fruit and vegetable based products, the Kelani Valley Canneries factory was the first in Sri Lanka to obtain Organic Certification for these items which are sent to various international markets. Over 95 percent of the present production that caters to the local market use organically grown produce. Organic Certification from NASA - National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia, SKAL - Germany, OF&G - Organic Farmers and Growers UK and IMO of Switzerland has ensured that highest standard of quality is afforded to a fast growing consumer base both here and abroad. Some of the specialised equipment used in the production process are IQF (Instant Quick Freeze) and advanced cold room technology.
