A project to develop by roads in the Kegalle Urban Council area was
launched at a cost of Rs 160 million. Main by roads have already been
rehabilitated under this project.
Under the project, the Bandaranaike Road is being widened and
carpeted and almost 90 percent of the work has been completed.
Bandaranaike road, which was only four metres wide has been further
widened to eight metres to transform it as a two lane road.
This road is often used as an alternative road by motorists when
there is heavy congestion of vehicles along the Colombo- Kandy Highway.
This work is estimated to cost Rs 100 million.
Apart from this, the access road to the Kegalle Economic Centre,
Playground Road and Ashley Pieris Mawatha are being rehabiliated as a
cost of Rs 60 million.
Kegalle Urban Council chairman G K Samarasinghe said these by roads
are being developed in association with the Road Development Authority
to provide easy access to Kegalle town for the people in the area.
The heavy congestion of vehicles in Kegalle town on the Colombo -
Kandy Road during the day is inconveniencing motorists and the public.
The authorities decided to widen and develop Bandaranaike Mawatha as
a solution to this.
