External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris expressed Sri Lankan
government's warm thanks for the strong and consistent support of
Bangladesh at his meeting with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
at the latter's Office in Dhaka. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assured
Minister Peiris of continued support of Bangladesh on the basis of
principle, as Sri Lanka addresses the tasks of development and
reconciliation.
The Bangladeshi Prime Minister, who attended the inaugural session of
the international conference on Development and Empowerment convened by
her and addressed by Prof. Peiris, commented on the shared experience of
the South Asian region in this regard and discussed with the visiting
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister practical strategies for achieving common
objectives in keeping with the aspirations of the region.
Minister Prof. Peiris had discussions with Bangladeshi Foreign
Minister Dr. Dipu Moni at the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Dhaka on all
aspects of bilateral co-operation.
The greatly expanded activities of the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Business
Council received a sharp focus in the discussion.
Prof. Peiris was the main speaker at the session on Counter Terrorism
in the international conference. He also addressed a joint meeting of
the Bangladesh Institute of International Strategic Studies and the
Bangladesh Enterprise Institute on "Equity, Opportunity and Empowerment:
A South Asian Perspective".
This was chaired by Adviser on International Affairs to the Prime
Minister of Bangladesh Dr. Gowher Rizwi.
