Shining with exuberant talents
Amalshan GUNERATHNE
It was a day to let their heart strings lose. Feet moving to the
lively music, they took the stage to express themselves with exuberant
moves. No-longer had they to stay shy and reel in self-depreciation.
Though mentally challenged they may be, the unparalleled talents that
they possess are boundless. The day was proof to the fact that they too
have the capacity to stand on their own and add colour and joy to the
world.

World Dow
World Down Syndrome Day celebrations |
The World Down Syndrome Day Commemorations were held in grand fashion
at Royal College premises recently, as kids with Down Syndrome got
together to showcase their unique talents on an interactive day. The day
was theirs to shine. The day consisted with a walk, medical clinic and
an entertaining variety show where they entertained the audience with
their unique talents.
The event was presented by ‘Kosala Dullewa Foundation for Children
with Special Needs’ together with Rotaract District 3220. The project
was hosted by Rotaract Clubs of University of Colombo (Faculty of Arts,
Faculty of Management and Finance, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science),
Rotaract Clubs of University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa,
University of Sri Jayawardanapura and Interact Club of Royal College.
Speaking to Artscope, Dilanka Weerakon, Rotaract District Committee
service director noted, “I thought the kids had a great day, the walk
and the variety show was a huge success.
We organized the event with Kosala Dullewa Foundation and we strongly
believe that such programmes, will provide necessary exposure and
confidence that they need to succeed in their lives.” The kids were all
trained by Kosala Dullewa Foundation. The foundation strongly believes
that the society should change their attitude towards kids with such
mental and physically disabilities. They feel that limited exposure to
the society had alienated them to a certain extent.
But they also firmly hold the view that with proper help, these kids
can be guided to build up their confidence so that they can rise up to
brighten up their future. They strongly believe that these kids possess
both mental and physical strength to stand on their own.
