Ilmee wins five titles at Mayor’s Cup Tourney

Ilmee De Silva of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo won five titles in the Mayor’s Cup 2011 Badminton Championship at Nuwara Eliya town hall indoor stadium yesterday.

Ilmee who comprehensively won girls’ under 17, 19 single finals in the junior category extended her dominance in women’s open singles and doubles. She partnered Iresh Maduranga and defeated Lakshan and Bashi in the Mixed doubles and made it five titles for her.

The much awaited event, men’s single was won by Lasitha Menaka where he overcame Hasitha Chanaka quite easily by 21-9,21-15. But the open champion could not prevent his defeat in the open double final with his shuttle mate Amila Fernando . R S Dahanayake and Hasitha Chanaka came back into the game despite losing the first set and successfully had the better of their opponent in a three setter by 2-1.

S D Kumar of Nuwara Eliya won the masters’ championship when he overcame Sunil Jayasiri of Ambalangoda by 21-15 ,21-10 and shared the victory with Gamini Jayasundara in the over 50 men’s double final .

Anura Jayantha of Nuwara Eliya grabbed two titles in the veterans’ category when he won the finals of over 40 and over 35 men’s doubles in partnership with Dammika Wanigasekara.

Kamal Gamlath and Dharshana Senaratne defeated Adikari and Roshan to win the title in over 40 men’s doubles final while over 50 men’s doubles title went to S D Kumar and Gamini Dissanayake.

Ilmee De Silva has many reasons to say Mayor’s Cup 2011 is all hers as she collected five medals in the tourney. She beat her sister Bashi in the women’s open single by 21-15,21-17 , while in the women’s double event De Silva pair overcame Rashmindi and Dimagi Kotigala at 21-8 and 21-17. Dissanayake overcame A Gunawardena in the over 35 women’s single to win the title being the only champion in the women’s veterans’ category.
