"This will also provide an opportunity for them to be ready for the
demanding job market here and abroad," Youth Affairs Minister Dullas
Alahapperuma said.
The minister made these remarks when he met young graduates in Jaffna
and Kilinochchi at the Ministry recently.
Listening to their problems, the minister said that this programme
will be shortly implemented to improve the livelihoods of the unemployed
graduates by raising literacy rates, creating income, and providing
access to government services, information technology and education.
"We upgraded the Jaffna Technical College as a Technological
University to provide the opportunity for Northern youth to develop
their academic knowledge, skills and specialized knowledge in
traditional and emerging technical areas," he said.
A new branch of the National Institute of Business Management has
also been set up in Jaffna.
Students and Northern youth will get the opportunity to follow
courses in Information Technology, Management Studies and English
language with the opening of its new centre.
The graduates requested the minister to provide a speedy solution to
their unemployment problem which has become a major issue in the North.
They complained to the minister that vacancies in the North have been
filled with outsiders without giving opportunities for them.
The minister assured that this problem will not rise in the future,
since the government has taken a policy decision to give a prominent
place to qualified applicants in the North when recruitments are made.
