Elections to 70 LG bodies in June

Health Minister and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said that the local government elections for 70 local government bodies which were postponed due to legal procedures will be held in June.

Addressing a ceremony held in Seruwila, Kantale Minister Sirisena said that earlier the postponed elections were scheduled for this month but upon President Mahinda Rajapaksa's instructions they were rescheduled to June due to 2,600th Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi celebrations in May.

Candidates should commence their election campaigns aiming to finish them by mid June, the Minister said.

The government was forced to postpone LG polls in 70 local government bodies as almost all political parties filed court cases.

The government will win all 70 LG bodies because there is no active election campaign of the UNP or JVP, the minister added.
