Jaffna witnessing construction boom
‘Jaffna district which is returning to normalcy in the post war era
is experiencing a rapid construction boom. To cater to the needs of the
internally displaced families due to the prolonged war, Jaffna’s civil
administration is vigorously expediting the construction of new houses.
This was stated by Jaffna GA Imelda Sukumar. She said that in
addition to the houses constructed in the High Security Zone in Jaffna,
about 17,000 displaced persons were also resettled. The government is in
the process of building 13,350 houses with the funds provided by the
World Bank. So far construction of 9,406 houses has been completed, and
construction of another 3,944 houses is almost complete.
The Jaffna GA further said that she is happy that even the NGOs are
playing an active role in constructing new houses for the displaced
people.
Sukumar further said that the two TNA MPs Mavai Senathiraja and
Suresh Premachandran were very impressed with the resettlement project
conducted successfully by the civil administration in the High Security
Zone. “While thanking me they requested that the civil administration
should continue to resettle more and more civilians in the High Security
Zone in future,” she said.
