Nine records shattered on final day

John Tarbat Senior Athletic C’ships

ATHLETICS: A total of nine more records were shattered on the third and final day of the Sir John Tarbat Schools Senior Athletics Championships concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Outstation athletes continued their dominance as they accounted for seven of the nine new marks on the final day. With the two records established on the first two days, a total of 11 meet records were erased during the three-day meet.

Ratnayake MMV, Walala, with 150 points, won the boys overall championship while the overall girls title was shared by Senanayaka MMV, Madampe and A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala. Both schools finished with 211 points each in the overall girls championship standings.

V.G. Wickramasinghe of St. Anthony’s College, Kandy and S.N. Gunathillake of Mahinda College Galle were adjudged the most outstanding athletes in the boys events.

R.M. Chandrika Subhashini of Senanayaka MMV, Madampe won the title for the Most Outstanding Athlete in the girls events. She had a marvellous performance in the under-20 400m event, clocking 55.24 seconds.

She also led her school team to victory in the girls’ 4 x 400m relay with a new games record of four minutes and 03 seconds

D.N. Gunathillake of Mahinda College Galle lowered the previous record for boys U-20 400m hurdles with a fine time of 54.6 seconds.

St. Joseph’s College Colombo returned a record timing of three minutes and 36 seconds in the boys 4 x 400m relay.

The other record breakers on the final day were Sajith Nadeeshan of Maris Stella College Negombo (U-18 boys 110m hurdles), K.P.N.M. Kalupahana of Sumana Balika MV, Rathnapura (U-20 girls 400m hurdles), Ishali Chandrasekara of Furgusen High School Ratnapura (U-20 girls long jump) and P.G. Buultgens of Vidyartha College Kandy (U-18 boys 400m hurdles) also set new records yesterday.

Shyni Mahaliyana from St. Bridget’s Convent Colombo equalled the previous record of 15.3 seconds for the girls’ U-16 100m hurdles.

Championship awards won by schools and Best Athlete awards presented at yesterday’s closing day ceremony were as follows:

U-16 Girls Championship: A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala

U-16 Boys Championship: St. Joseph’s College, Colombo -10

U-18 Girls Championship: Senanayake MMV, Madampe

U-18 Boys Championship: A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala

U-20 Girls Championship: Senanayake MMV, Madampe

U-20 Boys Championship: St. Benedicts’ College

Overall field championship - Boys: Ananda College Colombo

Outstation track championship - Boys: Richmond College, Galle

Overall track championship - Boys: A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala

Relay championship - Girls: Senanayake MMV, Madampe

Relay championship Boys: St. Benedicts’ College

Best high jump W.P. Amitha Kasun, Rajanganaya Track Five Vidyalaya (2.00m)

400 m champion: R.M. Chandrika Subhashini, Senanayake MMV, Madampe, 55.24 seconds (New games record)

Long Jump champion: Ishali Chandrasekera - Fergusen Ladies High School 5.80 m (New games record).
