Poetry in politics - ONE AND ONLY ONE

Continued from last week

Title: Ek Minisek, Ekama Eka Minisek

Author: Ananda Goonatilleke, Attorney-at-Law.

Publisher: Regina Printers and Publishers, Ja-ela

What he has written was that if anything had happened to them the local and international peace vendors will call upon so-called international inquiries and he narrates the double standards of the so-called international community. (p.54) Advocating that our problems should be solved by ourselves, he states that the country can be saved, tigers can be disarmed only by war and that should be communicated to the outside forces.(p.54) He predicts that after winning the war, the government may face severe challenges as in 1948 and the challenges are more complex than in 1948. The situation is similar to the aftermath of winning a revolution. Lenin, Mao and Ho Chi Ming were able to meet such complex challenges. (p. 101)

Building a Sri Lankan nation and ending corruption are herculean tasks.(p. 102) Accordingly victory over LTTE dwarfs gaining of independence in 1948 and people’s victory in 1956. (p. 106) It is commendable how the writer writes about these challenges to a mass audience hiding his Marxian ideology.

Writing exactly sixteen days (16) after the victory over the terrorists, he asks whether the problems are over. His words about the HR lobby describing it as a Trojan horse are prophetic. (p. 123)

As a Marxist, he identifies the major contradiction during the war time; divides the role players into two camps, as those who are for the independence of the country and those who are for secession. (p.71) He regards the present coalition as the biggest and the broadest front ever made in Sri Lanka.

He explains how to handle correctly the present day contradictions as expounded by Marxist theoreticians. He suggests putting an end to the euphoria without belittling the victory. (p.129) Dealing with the hidden enemy is much more difficult than dealing with those who were armed with T-56.
