The Sri Lanka Development Officers Association (SLDOA) launched its
Sahana Diriya programme recently which will offer its 30,000 plus
members, motorcycles and trishaws at concessionary rates.
The SLDOA partnered with TV’s Lanka Private Limited and Laugfs
Capital for this programme.
At the launching ceremony at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute
recently, Association’s Secretary PS Member Deshamanya Ajith Jasundera
said motorcycles and trishaws will help development officers carry out
their work in the assigned areas efficiently.
He said the SLDOA decided to offer its members these considering
their transport needs.
According to the association, its members will be eligible to
purchase either trishaws or motorcycles with a Rs 10,000 rebate from the
original price.
Laugfs Capital will offer a concessionary leasing scheme for
recipients where they have to pay only 10 percent of the sale price of
the vehicle.
Other benefits under the scheme for purchases will be two free
helmets, insurance payment on an installment basis, a Rs 3,500 gift
voucher to buy a digital camera, a free Laugfs gas cylinder and three
free services.
The government recently recruited over 50,000 graduates to assists
its development efforts at the grassroots level.
The high ranking officials of Laugfs and TV’s joined the SLDOA
officers in announcing the Sahana Diriya programme.
Uva Wellassa University :
Aptitude test applications called

The Uva Wellassa University has called applications for the aptitude
test from students who wish to enroll at the university for the academic
year 2012/2013.
Those who have applied to the Uva Wellassa University are required to
pass the aptitude test before entering the university.
Applications and other details for the test can be downloaded from
www.uwu.ac.lk website. Applications should be sent on or before July 23.
Last year, many students could not sit for the aptitude tests as the
university held the aptitude tests without informing the candidates
properly.
Last year’s university handbook had not mentioned that aptitude tests
will be conducted prior to admitting new undergraduates. However, the
handbook for 2013 has mentioned in detail about the aptitude tests.
University Grants Commission Chairperson Prof Kshanika Hirimburegama
said students should be vigilant and refer to the media to be aware of
other aptitude tests conducted by other universities.
“We request students to read national newspapers and refer to other
media to learn about other aptitude tests in detail,” she said.
EU-SL Business Dialogue launch in Colombo
Investment Promotion Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Deputy
Minister Faiszer Mustapha will launch the European Union-Sri Lanka (EU-SL)
Investor Dialogue with the European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (ECCSL)
today at the Hilton Colombo Residence.
The reinstatement of the Investment and Promotion Ministry has been a
positive message to the prospective European investors. Minister
Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Deputy Minister Faiszer Mustapha, and the
Board of Investment have fully supported the ECCSL’s initiatives in
promoting investment to Sri Lanka. In this context many discussions have
been held on the way forward to enhance foreign direct investment in Sri
Lanka from a European perspective and to work in close collaboration.
The European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka is optimistic that its
initiatives would facilitate the European investors in numerous ways to
explore the possibilities to invest in Sri Lanka, and it hopes to expand
its services towards contributing to Sri Lanka’s investment and business
environment.
Guest lecture on Ramayana
A guest lecture on ‘Revisiting Ramayana in Contemporary India’ by
Daya Dissanayake, a writer, poet and columnist will be held on July 11
at 3.30 pm at the CCIS Discussion Room, NILIS Building (Ground Floor),
University of Colombo (Entrance from Bauddhaloka Mawatha) opposite
Central Cultural Fund). This lecture is organized by the Centre for

Human life honouring centenarian project shortly in Colombo
The Colombo Municipal Council’s Mutwal South Medical Centre head Dr.
Viraj Peramuna, will meet the Mayor this week, to discuss and finalise a
human life honouring centenarian identification and helping project in
the city in collaboration with Prof. Colvin Goonaratna headed Sri Lanka
Association for the Welfare of Centenarians (SLAWC).
Dr. Peramuna who is also an Executive committee member of the SLAWC,
had a discussion on this with of SLAWC Secretary Edward Arambewala on
Friday.
President opens mosque

President Mahinda Rajapaksa opened a mosque at Dharga Nagar,
Trincomalee. The Seenawatte Juma Mosque is the second largest mosque in
the island with modern facilities.
Policeman dies in accident
A Police Constable attached to Pallai Police Station was killed on
the spot in Eyakachchi Junction on July 5. Police Constable Ratnayake
(22) was riding a motor cycle and collided head-on with a fuel bowser.
The Pallai Police are investigating.
Jayaruban for Russia
E. Jayaruban of the Faculty of Commerce of Jaffna University left for
Russia to participate in the 27th Inter-university Athletic Competition.
Jayaruban secured the first place in High Jump at the Jaffna University
Athletic Meet.
He was accompanied by Sport Director Gananeshanathan and Senior
Instructor Physical Studies Jaffna University S. Saravanabawa Iyer.
Lightning kills Civil Defence officer

Civil Defence officer died after he was struck by lightning at Niyadella
in the Buttala Police Division on Saturday.
The victim was identified as D.M. Susantha, 31, of Maligawila.
Susantha had been taking shelter under a tree while returning home
after work, when he was struck by lightning. He was admitted to
Okkampitiya Rural Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries. Buttala
Police are investigating.
Eleven dog bitten students hospitalized

Eleven students of the Anuradhapura Central College were admitted to
the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital after they were bitten by a dog who
entered the school premises.
The dog entered the school at around 7.10 am and started biting
students.
Three male students and eight female students were hospitalized with
injuries. Three students are still under treatment while others were
discharged, hospital sources said.
Boot-legger fined
A boot-legger found guilty of making and selling illegal liquor and
spirits, and possessing illicit liquor manufacturing utensils was
imposed a Rs 40,000 fine by Walasmulla Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga.
According to excise sleuths, the accused was involved in this crime
for a lengthy period.
