No Constitution is static – AHM Azwer, MP

No Constitution or an amendment to a Constitution is unchangeable. It is the invincible right of a community to change or amend the Constitution of a country in keeping with the time and need of a community, states AHM Azwer, MP and Member Parliament Council in a release.

The release adds: “The American Constitution and the Indian Constitution have been subjected to severe amendments throughout the ages. So, it is harmonious with the thinking of the people and transformation the society to amened the Constitution as people’s life prolong on.

Azwer said so at a public meeting following a sports festival at Santhankerny grounds in Kalmunai. The event was organized by the Holyfield Sports Club last Sunday.

“The people in the East should be reminded that the late M.H.M. Ashraff, founder Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress was totally against the amalgamation of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. He fully realized the inherent danger behind the move to amalgamate both these provinces,” he said.

“The Muslims in the East will never fall into the TNA trap – earlier the LTTE trap and support such an amalgamation knowing fully well the feelings of the Eastern people for the past 50 years, I can confidently state that the Batticaloa Tamils will not like to come under the domination of the Jaffna Tamils. The West is West, the East is East and never the twain shall meet... One is reminded of the eternal truth of Mark Twain though said in a different context here. Even the caste system that is still prevalent in the North is an endemic that the East would never like to follow,” MP Azwer said.

“The late Ashraff initially formed the Muslim United Front and worked jointly with the Tamil United Front. Then came the call from Prabhakaran to Ashraff to support the merger of the two provinces. He flatly refused and jumped over to Colombo when there was a threat to his life. The Muslims in the East would very well remember this incident,” he said.

“When there was no Police and Land powers devolved to the North, about 100,000 Muslims in Jaffna were chased away from their land of birth with 24 hours notice to quit. Four hundred odd Muslim and Sinhala policemen were butchered by the LTTE at the Karaitivu camp. So how could the Muslims and Sinhalese trust the LTTE and its proxy, the TNA, “Azwer asked.

“Mahinda Chintana offers a healthy life through sports. The youth of the Eastern Province who have taken up cricket seriously should be given every assistance and encouragement. In this respect, I had earlier moved a Motion in Parliament to convert Sathankerny grounds into a fully fledged national stadium so that thousands of youth and schoolchildren will be trained in the East and afforded an opportunity to rise to national and international levels,” he said.

Azwer said that he would take up this matter with the Minister of Sports and help to boost the sports image of the Batticaloa youth.

Holyfield Sports Club President M.M. Jesmin, MMC A.M.M. Riyaz, Dr. M. Reyaz, Musthaffa Master and others addressed the gathering. Prizes were distributed to the winners by Chief Guest Azwer.
