China to assist in wind power generation

China will assist Sri Lanka to launch a wind power generation project and make the Colombo harbour Asia's commercial hub, said Chinese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Wu Jianghao said when he met Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the ministry yesterday.

Ambassador Jiangho said a top level team of investors from China will visit Sri Lanka to explore the possibilities of investing in the development of infrastructure facilities and the provision of agricultural implements among other areas.

Plans will be drawn up to establish wind power generation systems in rural areas in the vicinity of paddy fields. Multipurpose wind power generation towers will be built to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during peak hours. This system will help reduce maintenance costs of transmitters.

Minister Rajapaksa said many opportunities are available in Sri Lanka for investment. He said an increasing number of women are employed in different fields, including garment, fashion and gem and jewellery industries.
