Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena appointed a high-level special committee to probe corruption and malpractices taking place in connection with purchasing drugs and offering tenders and building contracts, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman said the committee is chaired by Minister Sirisena. The other members of the committee are Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala, National Cosmetic Devices and Drugs Authority Chairman Dr. Hemantha Beneragama and Health Ministry legal officer Riyaza Ahmed.

Minister Sirisena instructed health officials to blacklist companies violating the agreements, the spokesman said. The Health Ministry received several proposals, complaints and accusations in connection with various parties and persons affected by tender offering procedures for drug purchasing, building construction etc.

The violation of agreements cause drug shortages and congestion at state hospitals without new buildings, he added.
