Thanura Mendis
The media unit of Nalanda College was initiated in 1986 with the
prospective of fulfilling the growing need to establish a strong media
tradition in Sri Lankan school culture. As a result, it has been able to
crown the school media sector throughout its history of 27 years.

organised Sambhasha - interschool announcing competition in both Sinhala
and English medium which is scheduled for July 13.
Started with Ecstacy of Nalanda - the first ever broadcasting mission
of the college in 1996, the history accounts for 13 such projects which
includes Nalandasara - a web radio broadcast in 2006 that was broadcast
globally.
As a pioneering media unit, it managed to televise the first ever
school television channel in Sri Lanka in 2005 which was extended to six
such projects in all, including the 2008 broadcast using the chroma
technology and the 2012 effort with IPTV technology which were
groundbreaking initiatives when it comes to school arena.
Sambhasha was first organised in 2006 which was organised in line
with a workshop on technological aspects related to media which was
glistened by the presence of media experts and school representatives
all across the island. Sambhasha was continued incessantly from then
onwards, bringing the best of amateur journalists who are destined to
lead country’s journalism in the future. Nalanda College warmly invites
all the school journalists to participate in the competition and take

From Mirissa to Bouzigues by Seneka Abeyratne
An exhibition of black and white photography From Mirissa to
Bouzigues by Seneka Abeyratne will be held until July 14 at Cinnamon
Lakeside Colombo together with Alliance Francaise de Kotte.
According to Abeyratne Mirissa and Bouzigues are two scenic coastal
villages situated in southern Sri Lanka and the Languedoc-Roussillons
region of southern France, respectively. Mirissa lies between Galle and
Matara and Bouzigues, between Sete and Montpellier. Both rely heavily on
fisheries and tourism for income generation. The fishing community of
Mirissa engages primarily in coastal and deep-sea fishing while that of
Bouzigues specialises in the production of top-quality oysters. (Brand
name: “Huitre de Bouzigues.”) There are thousands of oyster tables
(farms) in the Etang de Thau – a picturesque salt-water lake which
merges with the Mediterranean at Sete.
“It took Mirissa several years to recover from the tsunami of 2004,
which devastated the coastal regions of Sri Lanka. It is now regarded as
one of the best spots in the world for watching blue whales.
I hope that through these images one will get an idea of the
contrasts as well as the similarities between the two fishing villages
described above: one bordered by the Indian Ocean, the other by the
Etang de Thau. Mirissa and Bouzigues differ vastly in terms of living
standards, yet both possess an intrinsic charm as well as a natural
beauty which, as a photographer, I find immensely appealing,” said
Abeyratne.
