Wesley down fancied Science College 20-17

Wesley College Colombo edged out the high riding Science College
Mount Lavinia by 20 points (one goal, two tries, one penalty) to 17 (two
goals, one penalty) in the quarter-final match of the Milo inter-schools
rugby knockout tournament for the President's Trophy which worked off at
Royal College Sports Complex yesterday.
Science College opened scoring in the 14th minute through an easy 20
metre penalty booted by Centre Chathura Gomez. But the lads from
Campbell Place made a bold reply with a try by winger Ishaq Jurangpathy
where scrum half Rahul de Silva missed the conversion (wesley 5 -3).
In the 37th minute Wesley skipper Rahul de Silva fired across a 20
metre penalty to make it 8 - 3. A short while before half time Ishaq
Jurangpathy scored another solitary try and the scores read 13 - 3 at
lemons.
Soon after the resumption, the lads from Mount Lavinia scored their
first try through prop Shalith Saumyakara where Gomes added the extra
points to make it 10 - 13 for Science.
In the 25th minute, Wesleyites reduced the deficit when number eight
Gavin Siegertz crashed through for a try near the post while Silva made
no mistake with the conversion (Wesley led 20 - 10)
A few minutes before the final whistle, Science flanker I.
Karunatilleke scored a try under the post giving Gomes an easy kick at
goal, but the game ended in favour of Wesley. Priyantha Gunaratne
refereed. The quarter final match between league champions Dharmaraja
College, Kandy and C.W.W. Kannangara MMV will take place at the same
venue at 4.30 PM today.
