Man held with hand grenade

Mount Lavinia Police on Tuesday arrested a suspect with a live SSG hand grenade in his possession on St Rita road at Wedikanda, Mount Lavinia.

The 40-year-old suspect is a resident of Moratumulla. He was to be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court yesterday.


Body found in Saragama Wewa

Kurunegala Police commenced an investigation into the death of a man whose body was found in Saragama Wewa in Kurunegala. The man appears to be around 55 years old was wearing brown long sleeved shirt and a batik sarong.

Police also found a pair of blue slippers near the body.


Aphrodisiac mixed with cannabis

Walasmulla Police on a tip-off arrested a suspect with 11.692 kilograms of Madana Modaka in his possession at Kirama, Walasmulla on Tuesday.

The drug, mixed with cannabis were packed in sachets and were in 50 boxes each with 25 pills. The Walasmulla Magistrate released him on Rs 100,000 surety on being produced before court.


Girl dies in trishaw mishap

A six-year-old girl died when a three wheeler overturned on the Minuwangoda-Andiambalama road in Katunayake on Tuesday. Hiruni Moksha Ruwindi of Negambo died in the incident.

Katunayake Police said the three wheeler overturned when it hit a vegetable sack fell from a lorry travelling in front of the three wheeler.

Investigations are continuing.


Help identify body

Police seek public assistance to identify the body of a man who succumbed to his injuries in the Jaffna Hospital on Tuesday while being treated after the Police found him lying on the Sangiliyan path on Kovil road, Jaffna. The 5' tall man with short hair is thin and was in red shorts and a white short sleeved shirt.

Meanwhile, another unidentified man, cyclist, knocked down by a lorry succumbed to his injuries in the Jaffna Hospital on the same day.

The lorry driver was remanded on being produced before the Jaffna Magistrate's Court. Investigations are continuing.


Infant dies, four injured in accident

A five-days-old infant died while three women and the driver were seriously injured when a three wheeler collided head on with a van on the Gampaha- Miriswatte road in Gampaha on Monday.

The baby girl succumbed to her injuries at in the Gamapaha hospital the following day. The van driver was remanded until July 15 by the Gampaha magistrate.


Illegal firearm manufacturer in hot water

Thirukkovil Police on a tip-off on Tuesday arrested an illegal firearm manufacturer at Ramasami road in Thirukkovil and seized three muzzle loaders, gun powder, empty shot gun bullets and lead balls. He was to be produced before the Thirukkovil Magistrate yesterday.


Caught with heroin

Badulla Police on Tuesday arrested a man with 2.450 grams of heroin in his possession at a car park near a girls school in Badulla.

The 31 year old suspect is a resident of Medapatha.

He was to be produced before Badulla Magistrate's Court yesterday.
