Grama Niladhari arrested over clash

The Grama Niladhari of Wahaneri, Poththanai was arrested by Valachchenai Police in connection with a clash between two groups of farmers in Kaluwamadu that injured five farmers who were hospitalised.

The clash occurred over a dispute regarding irrigation water supplied to Wahaneri Wewa. Earlier, a group of farmers had illegally tapped the waters of Maduru Oya by blocking it in the upper reaches.

On the instructions of irrigation officials, another group of farmers had removed the blockade and as they were returning in a tractor, another group had blocked the road and attacked them leading to a clash between the two groups.
