Thirteenth Amendment was forced on us - A.H.M. Azwer, MP
Thamilini, who commandeered the Women's Wings of the LTTE is now
fully rehabilitated and is a free woman. She has expressed a desire to
get married and have children.
Mary Theresa who also carried a gun in the jungle has now tied her
knot to a Sinhalese Corporal of the Sri Lankan Army, states Alhaj A.H.M.
Azwer, Member of Parliament, Member of Parliament Council.
“So it has now dawned on everybody that the amendment to the
Thirteenth Amendment is no bar for love making,” he said.
Parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwer expressed these views at a series of
meetings held for the reorganization of SLFP branches in Kadjuwatta,
Galassa, Nagoda in the Kalutara electorate, organized by the Acting
Ports and Highways Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena.
He said the Thirteenth Amendment was a ‘Made in India’ product and
forced on us. Even President J.R. Jayewardene who signed this Amendment
told his partymen to engage themselves in a propaganda campaign for the
non-implementation of certain sections of this Amendment.
The founder of the SLMC, the late M.H.M. Ashraff too was against the
amalgamation of the North and East, because he genuinely felt that this
would jeopardize the interests of his community in the Eastern Province.
This firm stand of Ashraff was a cause of eviction of Muslims from the
North and he even had to leave Kalmunai and take residence in Colombo as
there was a threat to his live posed by the Tigers.
“The TNA too originally opposed the 13th Amendment. Then how come the
JVP who vehemently opposed this Amendment and was very vociferous in
sending away the Indian Peace Keeping Army from Sri Lanka now join hands
with the TNA and the UNP in supporting the retaining of the Thirteenth
Amendment. Well, instead of the original Tigers in the North, now we
have in the South, ‘Green Tigers and Red Tigers.’, “ he said.
“The ordinary people are not bothered about these constitutional
confrontations, but, only want to see development in the country.
Even in the North, the Tamils have realized the futility of engaging
themselves in media and verbose battles, but, want to better their
livelihood and enjoy the fruits of the massive development projects
initiated by the Government,” Azwer said.
“This pointedly indicates to a situation that the TNA would meet its
waterloo in the forthcoming Provincial Council Elections in the North,”
Azwer contended.
“Patriotic Sri Lankans would never forget or forgive the statement
made to them by then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe advising his
party cadres, that in order to remove the headache of the LTTE waged
war, they should agree to part with a portion of the country and be
happy thereafter.
He even went to the extent of signing a Ceasefire Agreement with
Prabhakaran bringing in the wake of it no benefit to the country, but, a
persistent and prolonged war of agony on the people,” he said.
Acting Ports and Highways Ministert Rohitha Abeygunawardena,
Parliamentarian Arundika Fernando, Nagoda PS Chairman Lakshman
Vidanapathirana and several others addressed these meetings. |
