Spectacles for the needy

Free pairs of spectacles were distributed among the needy in Uswatta, Kelaniya organised by Western Provincial Council Member U. George Perera after an eye screening camp.

Kelaniya Pradehsiya Sabha member Upul Peiris was also present.


Man dies in motorcycle crash

A 29-year-old man died on the spot when the motorcycle he was riding collided head on with a vehicle at Samurdhi Mawatha Sapugaskanda, Kelaniya.The victim was identified as Jagath Pushpakumara of Heiyanthuduwa, Biyagama.


Fine on garbage dumper

Mahara Kadawata Magistrate DharshikaWimalasiri imposed a fine of Rs 1,500 on an accused named U A Chandrakanthi of Peliyagoda who pleaded guilty to the charge of dumping litter into the Kelani River. Peliyagoda Police prosecuted.


Water project opening

The Pahala Kadugannawa Water Resource Development Project will be opened today at 2.00 pm.

The project built at a cost of Rs. 6.6.million by the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry will provide drinking water for 2,500 persons.

Ministers Dinesh Gunawardene, Athavuda Sebnevirathne, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Jagath Balasuriya, Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake and Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath will participate.


Workshop for Media Secretaries

A workshop for Media Secretaries on the Role of the Media Secretary in the National Development will be held on Wednesday at 8.30 am at the Government Information Department Auditorium. Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella will be Chief Guest.

Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary Dr. Charitha Herath, Government Information Department Director General Prof Ariyarathne Athugala, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Chairman Mohan Samaranayake and Economic Development Ministry Development and Communication Department Director General Prof. Sunanda Maddumabanda will address the workshop.


Flat construction commencement

Construction work on Janasenava Flats for middle class families at Kavirathne Place, Kirulapana will commence today at 9.00 am with the participation of Constructions, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Ministry Secretary Wimalasiri Perera, Malaysian Ambassador Almi Renudeen, WPC Member Dayakantha Perera and Colombo Mayor Mohommad Mussamil will also participate.

A wildlife photographic exhibition by renowned artist Asela Karunaratne will be held at Harold Peiris Gallery, Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Centre, Colombo 7 on July 12, 13 and 14 from 9 am to 7 pm.


Woman injured at level crossing


The cab was hit by the train in Kosgama

Another rail accident involving the Kelani Valley train was reported on Sunday.

A cab which was hit by the train in Kosgama, Aluth Ambalama at an unprotected railway crossing in turn hit a woman by force of the impact, injuring her. The cab was badly damaged and the front of the train was slightly damaged.

The injured woman was admitted to the Awissawella Hospital.


 


Two fined for garbage dumping

Two persons who pleaded guilty to a charge of polluting the environment by dumping garbage on the road were fined Rs. 3,000 each by Puttalam Additional District Judge and Magistrate Bharathi R. Wijertane.

She also warned them not to repeat the misdemeanour.



 


Four injured in motorcycle crash

Two motorcycles, one ridden by a couple and the other by two persons collided at Dambawatawana on the Galewela-Kalawewa road around 5 pm on June 29 injuring all four. The injured were admitted to the Galewela hospital. The woman was later transferred to the Dambulla hospital in a critical condition and from there to Kandy General Hospital. Residents said the highly deteriorated condition of the road may have caused the accident. Galewela police are investigating.


Teacher vacancies in Batticaloa

There are 52 teacher vacancies in the Batticaloa Education Zone which includes Manmunai North, Ariyampadi and part of Eravurpattu, Zonal Education Director Suba Chakravarti said. The vacancies are for 22 mathematics teachers, nine science teachers and 21 English teachers. This education zone has four national schools and 63 other schools, she said.


Urban Council to build park

The Valvettithurai Urban Council has acquired a paddy land and converted it into a park. The former chairman of the council started an the project but he could not complete it as the war intervened.

Present chairman N Anandarajah with the donation of philanthropists undertaken the completion of the park.


Meelad- Un-Nabi celebrations

The annual Meelad-Un-Nabi Celebrations of Malharus Sulhiya Central College – Galle will be held on July 3.

Chief Guest will be Parliamentarian A. H. M. Azwer and Guests of Honour will be former Mayor and Galle MMC Fowz Niyas, Galle MMC S. M. M. Nilam and Galle MMC Roshan Mawsoon.

Madaniya Kaleel, G. G. Ariyadasa and Ash Sheik M. I. M. Farook will also attend as special guests. Principal I M M Yoosuff will preside.


Dialogue on tourism industry

A dialogue on the Tourism Industry jointly organized by the Kelaniya University Archaeology Department and the Sri Lanka Tourism Journalists Association will be held at the University K2/003 hall on July 3 from 10 am to 2 pm. Vice Chancellor Prof. Sarath Amunugama will preside. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman Bhashwara Senanka Gunaratne will be the chief guest. Dr Suranga Silva, Prof. H. M. H. Abayaratne and Malinga Amarasinghe will be among the other speakers.


Yoga lecture, Kathak workshop

The Indian Cultural Centre in association with Yoga Mandir will hold a lecture titled ‘Pranayama for healthy life’ on Thursday at 7 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Yoga expert K. K Ganesh (Art of Living Foundation-India).

The programme will be held at the ICC auditorium at 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 07.

Meanwhile, the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will organise a Kathak workshop by Sadara Supathum Peiris on Friday at 1 p.m at the ICC auditorium at 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 07.

Kathak dancers, teachers and students can participate in this workshop.
