Hemas ventures into integrated logistics business

Hemas Transportation Sector is expanding operations, investing into developing integrated logistics facilities for shipping lines, importers and exporters through a state-of-the-art container depot and warehousing complex.

Operating under the name “Hemas Integrated Logistics (Pvt) Ltd,” the new venture is located in Welisara, with easy access to the main port of Colombo. The ground breaking ceremony took place recently in the presence of Thiyagarathne de Alwis, Chairman of the Wattala MabolePradheshiyaSabha, Board of Directors of Hemas Logistics (Pvt) Ltd and other key officials.

Spread over 6.5 acres of prime land within the Welisara Industrial Zone, the Depot comes equipped with the latest container handling equipment to provide a fast and efficient service to exporters, importers and shipping lines alike.

A key feature in the equipment configuration is the ability to stack seven containers, thereby increasing the capacity of the yard.

Apart from storing and handling empty containers, the company will also provide storage facilities for laden containers thereby offering a complete suite of depot services.

The company will also provide warehousing facilities to exporters, mainly aimed at apparel exports and ‘garment-on-hanger’ operations.

“We are buoyant of the opportunities logistics will bring into Sri Lanka and through this investment” said Ms. Kasturi Wilson, Managing Director of the Transportation Sector at Hemas.

“Our operations will aim to play a key role in positioning the country as a maritime and logistics hub”. The depot will have storage facilities for over 4,000 TEUs and will have container rigging, repair and maintenance facilities as well. Commercial operations of the yard are expected to commence in two months with the arrival of the handling equipment.

Hemas Transportation Sector will aim to build further on the strong results generated in 2012/13 through this project and reach a leading position in the market space through a strong service delivery platform.
