Bribery case: Judge remanded

The Homagama District Judge nabbed by bribery sleuths on Wednesday
night over an alleged acceptance of gratification to serve a judgement
in favour of a respondent in a case was ordered to be remanded until
June 3 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya.
The District Judge was arrested for accepting a gratification of Rs
300,000 from a respondent to settle a case which was to be taken up
before him today.
According to a member of the Commission to Investigate Bribery or
Corruption and former IGP Jayantha Wickremeratne, the Judge was arrested
at the latter’s residence in Hanwella while accepting the gratification
from the respondent.
He said the Judge had promised the respondent to serve a judgement in
her favour while accepting the bribe. The arrest was made on a complaint
by the respondent.
Wickremaratne said the commission sent a team of officials to arrest
the Judge after they received the complaint. |
