President returns
President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to the island last night after a
successful four day state visit to the People’s Republic of China.
Tube wells for religious places

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board launched a project to
sink tube wells at Buddhist temples and other places of religious
significance in remote areas under the guidance of Irrigation and Water
Resources Management Ministry.
Sinharaja depleting

The Sinharaja forest with an extent of 30,000 hectares has now
reduced to 12,000 hectares according to the latest statistics of the
Forest Conservation Department.
It has been encroached by unruly elements, it is said. There is a
large extent of kitul cultivation inside the forest through which
villagers keep their home fires burning.
The Sinharaja forest was declared a world heritage in 1989.
Dhamma talk
Dr Kosala de Silva will deliver a public dhamma talk in English based
on Seehanadha Sutta on June 1 at 4.30 pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road,
Bambalapitiya.
Workshop
Royal College, Colombo in collaboration with International Education
and Resource Network (IEARN) has conducted on-line project based
workshops such as Family History, Friends Book, My Country, Bullying,
Teddy Bear, World Heritage project, My Hero and National Crops.
This year's workshop will be held today from 9 am to 12.30 pm at the
Royal College Skill's Centre. It will be held under the patronage of US
Embassy Press and Information Officer Chris Elms.
Udara Soyza, a founder member as a student of Royal College and
currently Humanitarian Correspondent with United Nations will address
the students.
Inauguration
The inauguration of the Higher National Diploma in Journalism and
Media Management (2nd intake) course conducted by the Sri Lanka
Foundation will take place on June 2 at 9 am at the Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute, Colombo 7.
Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Chairman Mohan Samaranayake will be
the Chief Guest.
Awarding of schols
Fifty four students selected for universities will receive
scholarships from the Islamic Development Bank, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at
a function at the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre, Malaigawatte Colombo 10
tomorrow at 11 am.
The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Islamic Centre
Chairman M H Mohamed.
