Courses in Hindi, dance and classical music

The Indian Cultural Centre is accepting admission to its Hindi, Classical Dances Kathak and Bharata Natyam and Music classes in Hindustani style such as Vocal, Sitar, Violin and Tabla and Carnatic Vocal for 2013-14.

For Hindi, a special course for children between the ages of seven and 15 is also commenced. Those who wish to learn Hindi language as hobby and those who wish to attend morning classes can contact the Centre for special group classes.

The Hindustani Vocal Music classes will be conducted by Dr. Premadasa Mudunkotuwa and the Carnatic Vocal Music classes will be conducted by Aruthathy Sri Renganathan.

The Sitar course will be conducted by Dr. Nirmala Kumari Rodrigo, Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual and Performing Arts. Violin course will be conducted by Somasiri Illesinge, renowned violinist. Tabla courses will be conducted by S W Randoowa.

The Bharatha Natyam classes will be conducted by Subashini Pathmanathan, disciple of late Vazhvoorar Ramiah Pillai and Vasugy Jegatheeswaran, disciple of Padmashri Adyar K.Lakshman.

The Kathak classes will be conducted by Moksha Samarasuriya who received her Kathak dance training at Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music Govt. of U.P, Lucknow.

Applications for the courses are available at Indian Cultural Centre, 16/2, Gregory's Road, Colombo 07 (9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.) on weekdays. The course duration will be one year for each level. The students are taught Hindi for the Level 100 (beginners), Level 200 (intermediate) and Level 300 (advance). The examinations of the courses will be conducted by the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra and certificates will be issued. The classes will be conducted by Sri Lankan experts in Hindi and a specialist Hindi teacher from India. For further details contact the Indian Cultural Centre on 2684698 or Email: [email protected]


Kayts harbour to be rehabilitated

The natural harbour in Kayts will be rehabilitated and deepened to enable boats to anchor their vessels.

About 40 boats moored on the western side of the jetty will be removed to facilitate the renovation and deepening process. The Navy has given permission and assistance to remove the boats to Fisheries Aquatic Research Development Department.

The 40 boats anchored on the western side of the jetty comprise the uncommissionable boats and the boats seized by the Navy used for unlawful fishing and smuggling.

Chief Sanghanayake Thera passes away

The Ven Aluthgama Ananda, Chief Sanghanayake Thera of Tamankaduwa and Minneriya Division and Viharadhapathi Kumaragama Sri Sudarshanaramaya, Aluthgama Gammanthalawa Purana Viharaya, Nalanda Gedige Viharaya and Bogahakumbura Viharaya and Director Matale Kaludewa Meditation Centre passed away on May 18.

He was 61. The remains are lying at the Kumaragama Sri Sudarshanaramaya for the public to pay respects. Cremation takes place at the Kumaragama Anura Vidyalaya playground Hingurakgoda on May 22 at 2 pm.


Pillion rider dies in accident

A 30-year-old pillion rider on a motor cycle travelling on an unprotected bridge over the Kirama Oya close to the Tangalle fisheries harbour, fell in to the Oya and died on admission to Tangalle base hospital. The person who rode the bike was also injured. W.Jayaminda, a resident of Rekawa, Netopitiya died in the incident.

The person who rode the motorcycle was remanded until May 31 on being produced before Tangalle Magistrate K.U.T.de Silva.


Vesak celebrations

The Vesak festival will be celebrated on May 24 and 25 at the Sri Sunandaramaya ancient Buddhist temple at Galbada in Thihagoda.

According to Chief Incumbent of the temple Venerable Apparekke Dhammananda thera, these religious activities include Sil campaigns, Buddhist sermons, meditations, Boddhi poojas, Mal Pahan poojas, recitals of Vesak Bakthi geetha and religious chants, display of Vesak lanterns and exhibition of pandols.
