55th Junior National Athletic Championships:

Kaveri sets pole vault record

The opening day of the 55th Junior National Athletic Championships was a quite productive day as R.Kaveri from Sri Lanka Navy set up a new meet record at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

The 22 year old Sailor R.Kaveri cleared 3.10 metres in the womens under-23 pole vault event to erase the previous meet record of 3.00 metres, held by S.D.Liyanage.

Victories by the participants from Northern and Eastern Provinces were notable during this year’s championship.

Several victories by Makandura Central College also made the day very significant when H.N.Thilini Madushika from Makandura CC won the first place in the under 18 girls 5000 metres race walking event while H.H.Subodha Hansika from the same school secured the second place.

K.N.D Prabath Kulasuriya from Kuliyapitiya Central College won the under 18 boys 10000 metres race walking by clocking 53 minutes 23.06 seconds. P.A.V.A.S. Nadeesh from Makandura CC secured the silver medal, clocking 55 minutes 41.2 seconds while B.G.C.Sadeepa from same school became third in 55 minutes 58.9 seconds. Chathuranga Bangamuwage was the winner of the under 20 boys 10000 metres race walking. The competition will continue at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama from today and the 55th Junior National Athletic Championships will conclude on May 19.
