Illegal migrants arrested

Chilaw Police yesterday arrested 41 persons including four women and nine children at a lodge in Munneswaram planning to illegally migrate to Australia.

The suspects, residents of Gurunagar, Jaffna, are being questioned. Chilaw Police are investigating.

Four nabbed with heroin, pistol

The Police Narcotics Bureau (PMB) arrested four suspects with 1.150 kgs of heroin and a pistol from their possession in Modera, Poruthota. The first suspect was arrested with 700 grammes of heroin while transporting it in a three wheeler at Rassamulla Kanda.

The second suspect was nabbed in Poruthota with 300 grammes of heroin and an 8mm pistol. He was produced before the Negombo Magistrate's Court yesterday. The other two suspects were arrested in Modera and Demataoda junction with 100 and 50 grammes of heroin.

They were produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Indians held with sandalwood

Three Indians were arrested in Nittambuwa for possessing 227 kgs of sandalwood. They were arrested at a house in Kalagedihena. Nittambuwa Police produced the suspects before the Attanagalla Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Man's body found

Wadduwa Police found the body of a man that had been washed ashore at Wadduwa beach. The 5'4" tall bald man appears to be around 45 years. He was attired in a black trouser and a blue and white checked shirt. The body was sent to the Kalubowila Hospital morgue.

Search on for drowned man

Wellampitiya Police commenced a search operation to find the body of a man who drowned in Kelani Ganga. Information revealed the man aged 42, a manager of a private firm, had jumped into the river near Gangathilaka Viharaya.

Two with gun held in train

Wattegama Police acting on a tip-off, arrested two suspects at the Wattegama Railway Station with a 12 bore shot gun in their possession while travelling in a train from Nawalapitiya to Matale. The suspects aged 15 and 18, are residents of Galaha and Ramboda. The suspects when interrogated, revealed that they had stolen the weapon from the Superintendent's bungalow where they worked. They were produced before the Panwila Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Narrow escape for four

Four people escaped when the lorry they were travelling, collided with a train at the unguarded railway crossing at Olidoluwa, Chilaw on Monday. They had jumped off from the vehicle before it hit the train. The lorry had been dragged away for more than 50 metres. Chilaw Police are investigating.

Indian in custody

Velwatathurai Police arrested an Indian for illegal trading while on a visit visa. The 29-year-old suspect was arrested at Konkane junction in Udupidiya with 77 saris and 78 sets of female garments. He was produced before the Point Pedro Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Cannabis among vegetables

Weeraketiya Police arrested a farmer who had a cannabis cultivation among corn and vegetables in his chena. Police found 597 cannabis plants and 1.90 kgs of dried cannabis. He was produced before the Walasmulla Magistrate.

GS held for forgery

A female Grama Sevaka officer who produced forged documents was arrested by Hatton Police on Wednesday. Investigations revealed that the woman had forged birth certificates of two children.

Assault case: suspect held

Uragasmanhandiya Police arrested a suspect wanted in connection with an incident where a 39-year-old woman had been assaulted and molested a week before in the same area. Further interrogation from the suspect revealed information about an automatic revolver and 10 9 mm bullets in his possession. He also revealed information about another suspect in Ambagaha Handiya who the police arrested with another automatic revolver and five bullets. The first suspect is being further questioned under detention orders while the second suspect was produced before court yesterday.

Child drowns

A grade three student of Seevali College, Bandarawela drowned when he accidentally fell into a pit filled with water on Wednesday. The victim was identified as K M Kasun Lakshan, 8, of Diyathalawa.
