Adopt a Dog in Sri Lanka:

Two years, over 750 adoptions and now going online

What started as a fan-page on Facebook 2 years ago has today, grown to be one of Sri Lanka's better known and entirely volunteer based non-profit animal welfare groups. As it celebrates two years of working towards a better life for stray dogs, Adopt a Dog in Sri Lanka (or ADSL) is proud to look back on everything they've been able to achieve. Their second year anniversary also marks the launch of their website www.adoptadoginsrilanka.com

The group has to-date rehomed over 750 stray puppies (many of whose owners continue to provide feedback on the puppy's welfare). Although it started off with rehoming, the group has since expanded into rescuing strays and abused house pets.

They have rescued and treated over 138 dogs and neutered over 300 dogs in Colombo. Through their sterilization camps held in Katharagama they have neutered 600 dogs, and they also have a programme to feed 126 dogs every other day.

The Facebook page was founded on May 13, 2011 when the three founding members, Oshadie Korale, Andrew Jebaraj and Megali Nanayakkara decided to actively seek help from friends on Faceboo to re-home the many strays they came across.

Today they have an enthusiastic team of like-minded people namely Hasini Silva, Shinuka Chandrasekara, Dilukshi Rupasinghe, Manoja Amarasinghe, Nihal De Silva, Nadeeka Dharmaratne, Nadeesha Paulis, Demi Hewa, Cyndi, Janith Lakmal Peiris, Hasini Chandrasekara and Himaja Gunaratne working on the various activities handled by the group.

"We are really proud of everything we've been able to do for the many dogs we've come across, and with the help of the wonderful people who support our work, we hope to do much more," Co-founder Oshadie says.

All work done by the group are funded by animal lovers from Sri Lanka and overseas, and supported by the over 12,600 people following the group's Facebook page. You can read more about the work they do and how you can get involved or donate for the cause, on both their Facebook page as well as their website.
