Motorcyclist knocked down by container carrier
A motorcyclist knocked down by a container carrier at Wadiyamankada
junction on Galle road in Kalutara South, succumbed to his injuries at
Nagoda hospital on Tuesday evening. W de Silva, 53, of Waskaduwa died in
the incident.
The driver of the vehicle was released on Rs 100,000 sureties when
produced before the Kalutara Magistrate's Court.
Meanwhile, Kalutara South Police seek public assistance to identify a
man died after being hit by a double cab on the Kalutara Bridge on
Monday. He succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo National Hospital.
The man appeared to be around 47 year old and was 5'3" tall. He had
short hair and was wearing a short sleeved black shirt and brown shorts.

Two cheat death
A driver and another in a car escaped unhurt when the car they were
traveling collided with a train on Monday at an unprotected railway
crossing at Pothupitiya, Wadduwa. The car was badly damaged when it hit
the Galle bound train from Colombo.
Two held with grenades
Two suspects with two grenades in their possession were arrested by
the Mirihana Special Operation Unit and Matara Police in Hanwella and in
Udapinwella on Monday. One is being further questioned under detention
while the other arrested in Matara was remanded until May 27 by the
Matara Magistrate.
Thief remanded
A suspect arrested for stealing a motorcycle and a battery was
remanded until May 22 on being produced before Marawila Magistrate's
Court.
Koswatte Police on a tip-off arrested the suspect on Monday.
Meanwhile, Kandy Police arrested a person with 1.290 grams of heroin
in his possession at Aruppala on the same day. He was remanded until May
22 by the Kandy Magistrate.
Shop gutted by fire
A plastic and mechanical goods store in Giradurukotte was gutted by
fire on Tuesday night. An adjoining shop was also affected.
Police and the people of the area doused the fire before it spread to
the other shops.
A large stock of vehicle batteries, water pumps, plastic goods and
electrical accessories are among the goods destroyed.
Police believe an electrical short circuit might have caused the
fire. Investigations are continuing.
