Not exactly going wild
Renowned and award winning wildlife and nature photographer Surgeon
Rear Admiral Lalith Ekanayake USP, MBBS, MD, FCCP, DDHM (Aus) is having
his second wildlife book launch and exhibition from May 16 to 19 at the
Harold Peiris gallery, Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Centre Colombo 7.
Lalith had his first book titled ‘the untamed road’ launched and the
exhibition in 2010.
Lalith has got many awards in wildlife photography both in Sri Lanka
and internationally under his belt. Recently concluded Austrian
Trierenberg Super Circuit International Photography Competition he has
won the Bronze Medal in nature category and has been adjudged as the
Runner up of the Wexas International wildlife Photography Competition
2012 in United Kingdom. Lalith is the first Sri Lankan to achieve these
feats. In addition Lalith has won the prestigious UPI Gold Medal and the
PSSL Bronze Medal at the 57th Photographic Society of Sri Lanka (PSSL)
International Photo Contest 2012.
He was the winner in monochrome too and also won the first place in
wildlife category and third places of mammals and birds categories of
the Chaaya-wild and Etisalat wildlife photo contest 2012. Also Lalith’s
photos were adjudged as the Editors choice and photo of the day and
photo of the month at 2011 and 2012 National Geographic Photo contests.
He also won the third and fourth places at the Sanctuary Asia
wildlife photo contest 2011 in India. Two of Lalith’s photos were highly
commended at the Oasis International Photo Contest 2012 in Italy.His
work has been published in many parts of the world. Apart from wildlife
parks and the forest of Sri Lanka Lalith frequently travels wildlife in
India, Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Tanzania. Lalith is the
Medical Director of the Sri Lanka Navy and also a Consultant Physician
and Gastroenterologist and is the only Specialist of the country in
Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine.
Lalith dedicates all his achievements to protection of the fauna and
flora of Sri Lanka, which are in real danger thus need quick attention.
“Priority is the protection and development not the income of wildlife
and nature of Sri Lanka,” Lalith believes.
