Visakha Walk 2013

Visakha Walk 2013 organized by the Visakha Vidyalaya Old Girls’ Association and the School Development Society, will be held on June 1 from 7am.

The Walk which starts from the school premises, will mark the school’s 95th anniversary.

All proceeds of this fund- raiser will be used for the much- needed renovations of the Jeremias Dias Hall. Past and present students and others who wish to participate can now purchase tickets, t-shirts and caps at the school gate and the OGA office.


Wasp attack

Four residents in Mandur Batticaloa were admitted to the Kaluwanchikudi hospital following a wasp attack recently. Officers from the Wellaweli Police arrived on the scene and took steps to relocate the wasp hives after putting up roadblocks in the area o keep people away.


Fines on power pirates

Fourteen suspects found guilty of pirating electricity were fined Rs 16,000 each by Kalawanchikudi Circuit Magistrate A H M Riyal.

Wellawela Police in association with CEB officials from Colombo who conducted the raids prosecuted.


Motorcyclist dies

A motorcyclist died after his motorcycle ran off the road and overturned on Galewela- Ranvediyawa road. The motorcyclist, Ganeshan Wijerathna, 23, was initially rushed the Galewela divisional hospital after receiving head injuries and later transferred to Dambulla base hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigations revealed that the victim had consumed liquor and was not able to control his cycle. Galewela Police are investigating.


Mini-cyclone damages 27 houses in Medirigiriya

Twenty seven houses were damaged in Medirigiriya following a mini-cyclone accompanied by rains. Polonnaruwa District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri said continuous rains posed flood threats and warned the people to be cautious.

A special team has been deployed by the District Secretary to help affected people.

Meanwhile, 10 sluice gates of the Parakrama Samudraya have been opened by six inches as the water level has risen.

The District Secretary said the cyclone experienced at around 10.30 am yesterday damaged roofs of many houses in Medrigiriya and Polonnaruwa. He said affected families will be provided with facilities. No casualties were reported, he said.
