Over 350 drunken drivers nabbed on New Year day

Errant drivers should be punished:

Around 360 drunken drivers were arrested by the police on April 13 and 14, former Divisional Secretary for Bingiriya, W E Jayathilake said.

He said they will be produced before court as they are directly responsible for accidents and deaths on roads.

“Many motorists do not follow the rules and regulations. These errant drivers should be punished,” Jayathilake said addressing Grama Niladharies of Kurunegala district in Bingiriya recently.

He said a special project to educate the school community on the evils of consuming liquor and harmful drugs will be launched in government schools in Kurunegala and Puttalam districts.

Accordingly, 500 awareness programmes will be conducted by the Education Ministry in collaboration with the Departments of Health and Local Government of the NWP-PC, he said.
