Ex-boyfriend poisons girl and commits suicide

A 24 year old girl who had taken sleeping pills following a failed love affair and admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital, died after allegedly being poisoned by her ex-boyfriend. It is alleged that the ex-boyfriend, a medical student had mixed the poison in some gram (Kadala), which he had given to the girl, when visiting her at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the boyfriend is reported to have committed suicide by infecting himself with a poisonous substance after fleeing to Imbuldeniya after poisoning the girl.

According to reports, K M Maheshika had been admitted to the Peradeniya hospital after taking an overdose of sleeping tablets. While she was at the hospital, the ex-boyfriend had to come to the hospital disguised as an intern and had given the girl a substance mixed with kadala. The girl died a few hours later.

The boyfriend identified as Amila Chaturanga from Imbuldeniya had later died after infecting himself with a poisonous substance.

The girl was an undergraduate of the Moratuwa University, while the ex-boyfriend was a medical student who was undergoing training at the Ragama hospital. Peradeniya OIC Chief Inspector Jaliya Heenkenda is conducting investigations under the supervision of Senior DIG (Central Province) H N B Ambanwela.

Meanwhile, the JMO who conducting the post mortem on the dead girl returned an open verdict and the body parts were ordered to he sent to the Government Analyst.
