Participating in the ceremony were Minster Mahinda Amaraweera,
Secretary Mohammed and officials from the ministry, Korean ambassador
Choi Jong- Moon, Resident Representative Cho Sang-Woo and staffers from
KOICA Sri Lanka Office.
Korean ambassador Choi delivered relief goods amounting to US $
30,000 which comprised 49 units of tents and 660 units of towels, to
Disaster Management Minister.
He also expressed hope that these modest amount of relief goods would
contribute to rehabilitating shelters and sanitation facilities for
around 340,000 people affected by floods and landslides last December
and January.
The minister expressed his gratitude to the ambassador for the
assistance.
Since the tsunami in 2004, KOICA has carried out projects and
programmes for emergency relief and rehabilitation of affected areas in
Sri Lanka.
As part of KOICA disaster relief assistance for Sri Lanka, the COMS
(Communications, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) was implemented
over the last two years to increase the capacity building of Sri Lanka’s
meteorological officials and engineers for weather forecasting
technologies.
KOICA will continue its efforts to help Sri Lanka toward disaster
prevention and management, a release from the KOICA office said. |
