Upananda Jayasundera - Kandy Sports Special Corr

Kandy district Sports Development Foundation held a meeting on April 10 presided by Gamini Seneviratne, Government Agent, Kandy.

It was decided to fix dates at the next meeting for the Annual Sports Programme for the year 2013/2014.

The sports activities are as follows: leather and soft ball cricket, soccer, hockey, boxing, swimming, basketball, gymnastic and athletics etc.

These activities will be funded by the sports fund of the foundation which has a capital of over eleven million. This amount was collected by the late Gen. Anuruddha Ratwatte from his friends and well-wishers for the benefit of the sportsmen of the city.

The credit should also go to late Gen Anuruddha Ratwatta for bringing the Kandy Bogambara Stadium to the international standard when he was the Minister of Power and Energy and the Deputy Minister of Defence in 1996. Due to his efforts, 24 playgrounds in the Kandy District were improved and supplied with sports equipment which included playgrounds like Hasalaka, Uda Dumbara, Patha Dumbara, Meda Dumbara areas and the youth of these areas benefitted from them.
