The prestigious 'Navy Cup', was bagged by Kiran De Niese winning two
second places in above 130 HP (Slalom) event and above 130 HP (Sprint)
jet ski event at the Navy Cup Water Sports Festival worked off at the
Gregory lake, Nuwara Eliya on April 15.
Sri Lanka Navy in collaboration with the Nuwara Eliya Municipal
Council conducted the festival. The spectacular festival, set in motion
by the pioneer in water sports in the island, Sri Lanka Navy, drew a
large number of sports enthusiasts across the island. Competitors vied
for honours testing their skills to the fullest. Their efforts were not
in vain for a wide array of fabulous prizes awaited the winners with the
compliments of the principal sponsors of the mega event.
First Lady Madam Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa graced the
occasion as the chief guest. Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal
Roshan Gunatilake, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral
Jayanath Colombage, President of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs Srima
Colombage, Mayor of Nuwara Eliya, Mahinda Dodampegamage and senior Naval
officers also attended the event.
The events-packed festival offered much excitement and entertainment
to the viewers.
Navy's elite Special Boat Squadron (SBS) held spectators spell-bound
by their stunning Arrow boats maneuvers. Exciting wind surfing and
skiing displays on the alluring waters of the historic Gregory Lake too
added colour to the occasion.
