Three die, six injured in accident

Three persons, including the driver of a van, died and six others were critically injured when the van went down a precipice at Lamour Lere on the Awissawella-Nuwara Eliya road in Lindula on Monday night around 11.30pm. Two of the deceased were identified as M Nalina Sanjeewa, 42, and W Antony Lal, 36, of Colombo 12. The other victims, a 36 year old woman, three boys aged 12,11 and 8 and two girls aged 14 and a year and half were transferred to Nuwara Eliya hospital from Lindula due to their critical condition. Police said they faced the mishap while on a trip to Nuwara Eliya.

Girl run down by reversing lorry

A four year old girl died when she was knocked down by a reversing lorry at Athapaththukanda in Walasmulla on Monday. The incident occurred when the owner of the lorry and few others pushed it backward to start it after it developed an engine trouble. The girl, G Nimashi Kaushalya of Hakmana was on a new year day visit to that house and was unaware of the lorry that was reversing towards her. Walasmulla Police arrested the driver of the lorry.

Murder suspect arrested

Modara Police arrested a 40 year old suspect, a resident of Weligama in connection with the death of a man who succumbed to his injuries at Colombo National Hospital after being found lying with stab injuries at a public convenience in Modara. Acting on information received, Modara Police found 47 year old S Manimannan of Colombo 15 with stab injuries on Monday. Meanwhile, Negambo Police on the same day found the body of a man at Kattuwa. The man appears to be around 55 years old. He was wearing a short sleeved white shirt and a checked sarong. The body was sent to Negambo hospital morgue. Further investigations continue.

Watery grave for six

A father and his son drowned when a canoe they were riding overturned in Bathalagoda Wewa in Ibbagamuwa Sunday. A M Rizmi, 36, and his four year old son, A R Umar died in the incident. Acting on information received, Medirigiriya Police found the body of a 19 year old who drowned in Damsopura Wewa while bathing. Another person drowned while bathing in Mahaweli Ganga at Ginigathhena on the same day.

Police said 25 year old Dayan Madusanka of Dematagoda faced the mishap while visiting his relatives. Investigations continue. Kosgama Police reported the death of a 14 year old boy who drowned in Kelani Ganga while bathing with friends on Sunday. Lahiru Chinthaka of Meegoda died in the incident. Another person drowned while bathing in Malayadi Wewa in Damana. He was identified as 48 year old W W Ratnasiri of Helagampura.

Murder suspect remanded

A suspect in connection with a double murder where two persons in Panamura had been stabbed to death was remanded until April 23 by the Embilitpitiya magistrate. Manjula Prasanna and Saman Kumara of Panamura, both 24 years old succumbed to their stab injuries at Embilipitiya hospital. The incident occurred at Jayawikumgama on Saturday night. Investigations continue.
