Helping hand for sportsmen

Hambantota district parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa will provide assistance to youths who excel in sports. Youths will be provided help under the Diriya Tharunyayata Saviyak programme under the Tharunyata Hetak concept. Youths who excel in sports will also be provided financial allocations.


Trader fined for selling unhygienic dhal

A trader who was found guilty of possessing and selling unhygienic dhal was fined Rs 5,000 by Kurunegala Additional Magistrate Thilakaratna Bandara recently.


Remove pavement hawkers, urge residents

Residents complain of pavement hawkers in the heart of Ambalantota town. They said the pavement hawkers obstruct pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

They said even the bus halt in the heart of Ambalantota town is invaded by pavement hawkers.

Residents request the authorities to taken action in this regard and make the area free from pavement hawkers.


Land deed distribution

The Angunakolapelessa Divisional Secretariat will distribute 1,200 land deeds among those who did not have ownership for their lands for several decades. On an earlier occasion, 268 deeds were awarded at a ceremony held under the patronage of Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.


Tree planting

Marking the Sinhala Hindu New Year, 28,424 fruit bearing trees were planted in the Jaffna district. The fruit bearing trees were issued through Grama Niladharis. Two hundred families were selected for the purpose.


Staff quarters opening

The Islamic Center for the Physically Handicapped, Doolmala, Thihariya will open the Staff Quarters on April 21 at 10 am at the ICPH premises under the patronage of its President Jiffry Haniffa. Zam Gems Pvt Ltd Managing Director Al Haj Z. A. M. Refai will be the chief guest.

Provincial Councilors and Pradeshiya Sabha members will participate.

Cultural items presented by differently-abled students will also take place.


Star hotels near Mattala Airport

Ten star hotels with 15,000 rooms will be set up close to the Mattala International Airport, said Hambantota district parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

He said foreign investors have expressed willingness to invest in these hotels.


Turtle egg snatchers beware

Wildlife officials are on the look out for those who dig up the Kalametiya, Rekawana and Ussangoda coastal belt in search of turtle eggs which has been prohibited for decades. Kalametiya wildlife official I. Gurusinha said this is the season turtles lay eggs and some people collect turtle eggs to be sold for high prices.
