Rouge commuters nabbed in railway raids

The Railways Department collected over Rs 2,050,110 as fines during raids and operations in January and February.

Railways Department Commercial Superintendent G W S Sisira Kumara said 2,888 fraudulent commuters were fined during raids and operations at Railways Regional Zones of Colombo,Nawalapitiya and Anuradhapura.

Travelling without tickets and also travelling in class one or two with class 3 tickets were among the offences committed by the commuters, he said. A huge amount of income is deprived to the Department of Railways due to fraudulent commuters, Kumara said.

He said with the aim of minimizing offences, more raids will be carried out throughout the island.
