The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has taken legal action against
3,058 errant traders who violated rules and regulations of the CAA Act
during the festive season.
CAA officials nabbed the errant traders during raids conducted by CAA
squads from March 1 across the country, CAA chairman Rumy Marzook said.
He said CAA earned Rs 8 million from fines imposed by Court on errant
traders. Marzook said random checks were carried out in selected areas
in Colombo and suburbs and Negombo, Chilaw, Puttalam, Wattala and
Moratuwa where commercial activities were high during the festive
season. A majority of individuals had marketed their products above the
stipulated prices, he said.
Hiding food, not displaying price lists, selling outdated items,
exploiting consumers by giving incorrect information and not displaying
the manufactured date on food items were among the other deceptive
conduct and unfair trade practices of traders.
