‘Romeo Juliet La’ on March 30

Co-directed by Nadeeka Bandara and Jagath Jayasekara, ‘Romeo Juliet La’ will be staged at Maradana Tower Hall on March 30 at 6.30 pm.

Is Shakespeare’s Juliet the male fantasy of a woman, committing suicide for the sake of him? Is Romeo the male fantasy of a woman, prepared to commit suicide for the sake of such a woman?

Shakespeare talks about Romeo’s love for Rosaline but does not make him an ideal lover. He makes Juliet an ideal lover who has earlier loved none. Why? Is she the male fantasy of a woman, made for himself?

Why does Shakespeare manoeuvre Romeo and Juliet into suicide without allowing them to live together? Is it because Shakespeare had known that the beauty of male-female love is perpetuated only by death?

Is the “Personal Family” capable of sharing love as the consummation of “personal love”? To whom is it necessary to continue the personal families of Juliet’s love subject to atomization? Why do the families of Juliet’s agonize themselves to keep their families highly personal and private from others.

“We experience hunger, wars, smouldering anger of a planet, changed by us and proletarian suffering where one man cannot perceive the other, and the manacles on us for over 3000 years by religions.

Do you think that women should be get children to continue this process? Then what is the human honour which you and I enjoy? What are the remaining evidences to prove that we have been able to share together the life on this earth?”
