Union Chemicals clinches Cleaner Production Bronze Award

Union Chemicals Lanka PLC clinched the prestigious Cleaner Production Bronze Award in the medium category, at a glittering ceremony held recently at the Galadari Hotel.

Gamini Gunasekera, Managing Director of Union Chemical said, "Cleaner production is motivated by environmental imperatives but also makes economic sense as it increases production efficiency while minimizing waste and emissions."

The Company plans to introduce a range of environmentally-friendly water-based products to the market over the course of this year, Union Chemicals Managing Director Gamini Gunasekera, stated.

"R&D is a constant process for the company and whilst developing our existing line of products and improving productivity and process capabilities is a strong focus for us, we are always looking to new innovations, primarily in the water-based products which are gaining popularity on a global level," Gunasekera said.

Union Chemicals' existing product line includes latex products and industrial chemicals along with applications in the paint industry, packaging, rubber, textiles and household and personal care industries.

Pioneers in the Petrochemical industry in Sri Lanka, Union Chemicals has remained the undisputed market leader over the past decade, showing sure sign of commitment to pioneering development in this field. This award is yet another feather in their hat.

Among the new water-based products to be offered by Union Chemicals are paper coatings, shoe coating and water-based ink binders.

"Water-based products are becoming an increasingly popular innovation not only because it's environmentally-friendly but also because they are more convenient to apply.

The development of environmentally-friendly products from Union Chemicals is also part of an ongoing effort to 'go green'.

Union Chemicals has also been a winner of Sri Lanka's prestigious National Green Bronze Awards 2012 This record reflects Union Chemicals' leadership constant endeavor to create innovative and sustainable offerings, which can minimize environmental impact.

"One of the key reasons for the success of Union Chemicals is good governance, which includes environmentally responsible practices. We are constantly looking to reduce, reuse and recycle and we are in the process of implementing more efficient waste management processes," said Gunasekera.
