Sangeeth and Anuk wreck Cambrians
Dilwin Mendis - Moratuwa Sports Corr.
A heavy downpour and inclement weather put a halt at 3.00 pm for the
first day’s play of the 63rd “Battle of the Golds” between Prince of
Wales College and St.Sebastian’s College which began at Tyronne Fernando
Stadium , Moratuwa yesterday.
Sebs skipper Anushka Perera won the toss and invited Cambrian skipper
Kusal Mendis to take strike and his gamble paved off with Cambrian
batsmen returning to the pavilion at regular intervals and finally they
were all out for 162 runs.
Cambrian Skipper Kusal Mendis opened batting with the last weekend’s
hero Suchira Fernando and with the score at 19 Suchira departed .
Ravindra Sashanka joined the skipper when the score was at 36. He too
departed at seven runs.
At this stage, Cambrian all-rounder and the batsman in form Shanuka
Dulaj with more than 850 runs under his belt joined Kusal and put on 59
runs for the third wicket which was a bright spot of the Cambrians
innings.Dulaj was caught by Sangeeth Cooray off the bowling of Anuk
Fernando for 31 runs and Hasitha Lanka came to the middle to join Kusal.
Mendis was unfortunately out for well compiled 48 runs which
consisted four hits to the ropes and one over it. Soon after lunch, the
havoc continued and only Vice Captain Ashen Mendis gave some resistance
with 30 runs.
Anuk Fernando was the most successful bowler for Sebs with four
wickets for 38 while Sangeeth Cooray and Pramesh Fernando captured three
for 23 and two for 37 respectively
