Islamic Fundamentalism and Halal Certification
Dr. Nath Amarakone
The halal boycott proposed by the Bodu Bala Sena involves under halal
certification, not only meat products, as in the normal parlance but all
food products, cosmetics and body applications - a belief rooted in
Koranic literature dating back to the dark era before the onset of the
industrial revolution. Today science and technology have made so much
headway to decide on standards for human consumption.
To avoid controversy threatening the unity of our country. The
attempt by Muslim fundamentalists to isolate Muslims from non Muslims
for economic gain flows from Koranic doctrine emanating from Allah
himself and conveyed by Prophet Mohammed and is not amenable for
discussion and debate.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his recent address at the opening of
the AWC Fowzie school building referred to the need to educate Muslim
girls to bring about unity and integrity of the country not withstanding
differences in religion and ethnicity.
Sectarianism and tribalism, energized by Islamic Madrassis funded by
International Islamic Funds are resented by most non Muslims as
promoting segregation and a social enmity. The LTTE terrorists forced
78,000 Muslims out of Jaffna giving them 24 hours to quit. The high
decibel Mosque prayers have raised violations of fundamental rights.
Enforcing halal certification is yet another ploy foisted on the nation
in recent years by fundamentalists. Tribalism introduced by Muslim
fundamentalists has driven even developed nations to consider Islamic
immigrants with suspicion. With the spread of terrorism throughout the
world, the Hijab worn by Muslim women to cover their entire body has
been banned in some countries. The call for fundamentalism takes them
back in history to the time of Prophet Mohammed under duress and abject
submission that even Salmon Rishdie had to undergo.
With the establishment of democracy in newly independent colonies of
European powers, liberals advocated multiculturalism as an extension of
democracy. This encouraged minorities and immigrants to establish tribal
units giving rise to Alquida, Taliban and such dissident movements. The
NGOs funded by western powers too used this ploy to destabilize these
countries. Diversity and multiculturalism ended in separatist struggles
within nations supported by international terrorist syndicates.
The 1993 September 11 events in USA that brought down the twin towers
in New York changed the outlook of Americans towards multiculturalism.
Prof Samuel Huntington predicted a Clash of Civilizations if the process
gains momentum. The US policy makers used their war machine to bring
down Islamic states about the Arab Spring. African States such as Libya,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Sudan Somalia, Nigeria and Middle East
countries like Iran Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen were destabilized. Today most
western nations have dropped multiculturalism and have opted for
assimilation as a unifying force in their countries. Julia Guillard,
Prime Minister of Australia has come out firmly to get back to where
they come from as Australians have nurtured their culture for centuries.
Netherlands are planning to do away with multiculturalism. They consider
that Dutch culture will be the norm for Dutch. David Cameron and
Canadian Prime Minster are following suit.
