The auction has been organised by 15-year-old Settle College student
Bretten Lord, who is one of a group of students due to fly to Sri Lanka
in the summer of next year.
The students, who will be spending three weeks in Sri Lanka carrying
out community projects as well as sightseeing, each have to raise £3,195
to cover the cost of the trip.
And, on Mother's Day, Bretten will stage his World Challenge Auction
at The Lion, Settle.
The event, which will include supper and a drink, will see dozens of
lots being auctioned off which have been donated by shops and businesses
in and around the area.
They include a week's accommodation in Mallorca, a month's membership
to Settle gym and bags of coal from Settle Coal. More unusual lots are
having the chimney swept courtesy of SRG of Clapham, and a trailer of
muck for the garden from R and C Frankland.
Dalehead Vets has put up a pet MoT and annual booster, while David
Stubbs has offered a free MoT for the car.
Other lots range from meals, rugby tickets, a hair cut for the dog
and a swimming lesson at Settle Pool.
Bretten himself is offering an evening's babysitting and a karate
lesson and his school's RE teacher has donated a Paul McCartney signed
record cover.
"The people of Settle have been so generous, I thought I would have
to go further afield, but I haven't had to," he said.
So far, Bretten raised around £500. He hopes the proceeds of Sunday's
event will see him hit his fundraising target. Courtesy: Craven Herald
