Maha Shiva Rathri messages
Important festival in Hindu calendar - President
Maha Shiva Rathri is among the important festivals in the religious
calendar of Hindus, observed in honour of Lord Shiva on what is believed
to be the day he married Parvathi, states President Mahinda Rajapaksa in
a message. The message adds:
"Also considered the day that Lord Shiva performed the dance of
primordial creation and preservation, this festival is celebrated by the
Hindus the world over by fasting, night-long vigils at temples, making
special offerings to Lord Shiva, and the lighting of lamps and singing
of hymns in his praise.
"The lighting of lamps which is the highlight of this festival
symbolizes mankind's constant efforts to dispel ignorance and search for
knowledge. The devotion of Hindus also seeks to overcome evil tendencies
of lust, anger, greed, jealousy and hatred, and is directed at the
search for peace and harmony in the lives of Hindus and society.
"The Hindus of Sri Lanka have lived for centuries in keeping with
their religious beliefs, in harmony with the followers of other
religions. It is most encouraging that in this era of peace they
continue the good tradition of unity and understanding.
"It is my wish that every lamp that is lit on this special festive
day will enrich the spirituality of Hindus and every prayer offered
bring better understanding and unity among all our peoples.
"I wish all Sri Lankan Hindus every blessing on Maha Shiva Rathri to
fulfill their expectations for a better tomorrow."
Hindus make offerings to God Shiva - PM
"I wish to extend my greetings on account of Maha Shiva Rathri day
celebrated by Hindus living all over the world conducting rituals and
making offerings to god Shiva.
"Hindus believe that Maha Shiva Rathri day is celebrated to mark the
wedding between Shiva - Parvathi, and the Shiva's dance on primordial
creation and preservation of the world. Overcoming ignorance and
exploring the wisdom and to combat the sinful trends are the objectives
of the celebration of Maha Shiva Rathri day and I must say here that Sri
Lankan Hindus are truly involved in this expedition.
"As Sri Lankans welcome this memorable day with a spirit of great
devotion, irrespective of the differences in races and religions, we
should wish that ties of such co-existence should be further tightened.
"While studying the Hindu rituals conducted by Hindus and their
legends, it becomes very clear that god Shiva would fulfill the wishes
of the person who makes them no matter what religion he belongs to.
"I fervently wish that the blessings of god Shiva be bestowed on all
Hindus and Sri Lankans! May all your good wishes come true!
