The Project for Promoting Inland Aquaculture in Mannar will help
construct a hatchery including 10 mud ponds, sediment tanks, canals for
water supply and drainage, a service building, equipment and provide
training in aquaculture and inland fishery.
The project will be implemented by the National Aquaculture
Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA) and will contribute to
enhance food security and income generation of resettled communities in
Sirikkulama village in the Mannar district.
The target of constructing the mini hatchery is to produce two
million fingerlings per year which will be stocked in the Giant Tank and
other reservoirs in the Mannar district.
While around 108 fishery society members would benefit directly from
the project, nearly 70,000 fishermen in the Mannar district would
benefit indirectly.
The grant contract between Japanese ambassador Nobuhito Hobo and
National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA) Director
General Nimal Chandrarathne was signed at the ambassador's residence in
Colombo yesterday.
Advisor to the President on Reconciliation Professor Rajiva Wijesinha
