Relishing a visual treat
A Scene from Tharumalee
|
The simple lifestyle in the villages began to turn upside down with
the arrival of the colonial estate economic patterns. This resulted in
people struggling due to poverty and shortcomings with little means for
people to maintain their usual village lifestyle and the limitation of
land to build houses.
Even basic needs like food, medicine and education had to be obtained
in exchange for the labour they render to the estates. Thus these people
have become virtual slaves or a spineless lot.
This lifestyle has forced the village people to fall in line with the
new western cultures and be under obligation to estate owners, top
managers, walawwe hamus, clerks etc. While the older generation
helplessly but patiently observed this change thanks to the discipline
infused by Buddhist philosophy, the disturbed younger generation found a
way out of this frustration by getting addicted to liquor, robbery or
anti-social activities while some with radical ideas joined leftist
political movements.
Though Tharumalee flows as a simple but captivating story, the above
catastrophes that have eaten into our society has been underscored
effectively, to make the audiences ponder while relishing the visual
treat.
