Minor export agricultural crops to bring over Rs 40,000 m

The Export Agriculture Department anticipates an income of over
Rs.40,000 million from exporting minor agricultural crops this year,
said Department Director General W.D.L.Gunarathne.

He said cinnamon, pepper, coffe, nutmeg, citronella, vanilla, cocoa,
acrecanut, cardamom, clove and betel are these crop categories. Cinnamon
is the highest foreign exchange earner among them, he said.
These crops are grown in 14 districts. Cinnamon is mainly cultivated
in the Southern Province and in the districts of Kalutara, Ratnapura and
Badulla. Pepper, cocoa, clove, cardamom and nutmeg are grown in
Monaragala, Kurunegala, Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy and Matale districts.
New cultivation, recultivation, production and productivity promotion
activities will be encouraged by the department, he said.
Cultivation instructions, financial aids and technical know-how to
boost cultivation projects will be provided by the department Gunarathna
said. |
