Police investigating Rs 25 m cash robbery and carjacking
The Colombo Crime Division has launched investigations following a Rs
25 million cash robbery and carjacking that had taken place at around 12
noon yesterday on the Gangarama Road in Slave island, Colombo, police
The suspects have robbed Rs 10 million from the possession of two
employees of a famous Money Exchanger, who were returning in a car after
changing foreign currency ( US dollars) worth of Rs 25 million from a
private bank in Slave Island. The car in which the two employees
travelled in with the driver, was said to have been stopped by a person
whose appearance resembled that of a Traffic Police Officer.
Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody said, when the driver had
stopped the vehicle at the traffic light, one of the suspects posing off
as a traffic Police officer approached them, while a four-wheel Defender
jeep with four other suspects pulled up by the side of the vehicle.
The four suspects got out of the jeep, approached the car and pulled
the driver out of it and got in to the car. The suspects then drove away
with the two Money Exchange company employees and the cash.
“The two employees were later released by the suspects who got away
with the money. The employees were told to come to Peliyagoda to collect
their vehicle,” said SSP Jayakody.
The two employees complained about the incident to the police. The
car was recovered in the Pita Kotte area. The Colombo Crime Division is
investigating,” he added.
