STF nets contraband cigarettes

STF personnel on Saturday arrested four persons in Heenkenda, Ragama
and Bandaranaike Mawatha area along with a haul of cigarettes brought
into the country evading Customs duty.

STF personnel, acting on information received by intelligence unit
officers of the STF headquarters seized over 3,029,000 cigarettes, under
the brand name Gold Seal valued at nearly Rs.70 million from the
suspects' possession.
The STF personnel had conducted an operation in Heenkenda according
to an information they received about an illegal cigarettes storage
conducting by a group of persons attached to the underworld and several
crimes.
They have arrested two persons along with 13,145 cigarette cartons.
Each carton has 200 cigarettes.
STF personnel received the information about their other storage in
Colombo and they have arrested others after a search at Bandaranaike
Mawatha.
STF had arrested 2,000 cigarette cartons which have been ready for
transport. Suspects and arrested illegal cigarettes were handed over to
the Ragama and Kotahena Police and they are to be presented to the
Ragama and Aluthkade Magistrate Courts. |
